During daylight hours houseflies will rest on floors, walls and ceilings indoors. Outdoors they will rest on plants, the ground, fence wires, garbage cans and other similar surfaces. At night they will rest principally on ceiling, electric wires and dangling on fences, electric wires, edges of building and plants. In all situations they prefer corners and edges or thin objects, such as wires and strings. Night resting places are usually near daytime sources of food and are usually 5 to 15 feet off the ground.
Houseflies have mouthpart that enables them to ingest only liquid materials. Solid food is liquefied by means of regurgitated saliva. This liquefied food is then drawn up by the mouthparts and passed into the digestive tract.
House Flies may be found feeding and breeding in fresh manure, rotting fruits and vegetables, damp garbage and damp, decaying organic materials that are located outside of the structure.
These insects have been known to carry over 100 different kinds of disease-causing germs. Houseflies carry and spread a number of potentially deadly diseases including typhoid fever, salmonella, tuberculosis, conjunctivitis, leprosy and cholera, as well as intestinal worms and the bacteria responsible for dysentery. House Fly Prevention Tips
- Good Sanitation is the basic step in all fly management. Whenever possible, food and materials on which the flies can lay their eggs must be removed. House fly breed on decaying organic materials, garbage, animal excrement or polluted ground. Removal of these from the vicinity of infested premises will frequently make other measures unnecessary.
- Other consideration in sanitation includes regular removal of livestock or pet manures, soiled bedding, straw, and all other decaying plant and animal matter.
- Garbage cans and dumpsters should have tight-fitting lids and be cleaned regularly. Dry garbage and trash sold be placed in plastic garbage bags. Wet garbage should first be wrapped in old newspaper and then put in plastic garbage bags. All garbage receptacles should be located as far as from doors as possible.
- Openings to building should be tightly screened with screen having a mesh no longer than 12 to the inch for the larger flies and 18 to the inch for smaller insects. Screen doors should open outward. For extreme infestations, a double set of doors may be of value. It is usually unnecessary to screen above the third story building.
- Doors that must open for customers, trucks or passage of freight may permit entry of flies. Where such doors are opened constantly, an air stream (air curtain or door) may be used to prevent fly entry. An air stream must have velocity of 1600 feet per minute or more to be effective.
