The body is yellow to dark brown and has a rather distinctive darker brown violin-shaped mark on the top of the cephalothorax.

  • The brown recluse spider is usually found indoors, particularly in bathrooms, bedrooms, closets, garages, basements and cellers.
  • In home with forced-air heating and air conditioning and mostly above-ceiling ductwork.
  • Brown recluse spider is commonly found harboring in or around the duct work or registers.
  • They may also be present in attic areas or other location above the ceiling.
  • They are also found in cluttered closets or basement & outbuildings where miscellaneous items are stored

During the day, a recluse spider remains in some quiet place such as a closet, beneath furniture, or in any kind of receptacle, coming out at night to search for food.

They feed largely on insects; they inject prey with venom that is hemolytic rather than neurotoxic. They normally eat at night.

  • Most bite s occur when a person traps or crushes the spider while putting on old clothes that have been hanging in garage, or by rolling on the spider while asleep in bed.
  • The brown recluse spider can inflict a dangerous bite. The initial pain associated with the bite is not intense and is generally less troublesome than a bee sting. Within 8 to 12 hours the pain becomes quite intense, and over a period of a few days a large ulcerous sore form. This sore heals very slowly and often leaves an ugly and disfiguring scar.

Brown Recluse Spider Prevention Tips:

  • Trim weeds around the building foundation and remove debris to discourage insects and spiders from living next to a structure.
  • Eliminate or shield outdoor lights or bright indoor lights that attract the spiders’ insect food source. Install yellow or sodium vapor light bulbs outdoors since these attract fewer insects for spiders to feed upon.
  • Seal or caulk cracks and crevices and install screens and door sweeps to prevent spiders (as well as other unwanted pests) from moving indoors.
  • Use a vacuum cleaner to remove webs, spiders and their egg sacs. Spider elimination includes prevention of entry, reduction of spider food and any condition that might encourage spider invasion or reproduction.
  • Tape the edges of cardboard boxes to prevent spider entry.
  • Use plastic bags (sealed) to store loose items in the garage, basement, and attic.
  • Use Cobweb Eliminator to prevent formation of spider webs.

Sanitation:

  • Remove trash, old boxes, old clothing, wood piles, rock piles, and other unwanted items.
  • Eliminate clutter in closets, basements, attics, garages, and outbuildings.
  • Do not stack wood against the house.
  • Clean up dead insects that the brown recluse spider can feed on.
