Light gray or tan body and lighter colored wings. Both the body and the wings are densely covered with long hairs that give the body a fuzzy appearance. When at rest, the wings are folded over the body in a characteristics roof like manner.

They are poor fliers and are commonly seen walking or running on walls and other resting surfaces. When they do fly, their flight covers only a few feet and is in short, jerky lines characteristics of these flies. During the day, the adults rest in shaded areas, walls near plumbing fixtures, or on the sides of tubs and showers. Most of their activity occurs during the evening, when they may be seen hovering around drains and sinks.

Sanitation and habitat elimination are the keys to managing this group of flies. Damp organic matter in and around drains, sinks, bathing areas, mop closets, washing machines, potted plants, and so forth needs to be cleaned up, since it serves as a breeding source for these flies.
The management of Drain flies breeding in sewage plant filters requires special attention, since the use of insecticides in these areas is not approved. The techniques include keeping weeds and grass mowed around the sewage plant so that adults will be forced to rest on surfaces such as walls, where residual sprays can be used. In homes, breeding sites in sinks and floor drain can often be eliminated by means of caustic drain cleaners available for home use.
