Atlanta Pest Calendar: What Pests are Most Active Each Month

Atlanta Pest Calendar: What Pests are Most Active Each Month

Atlanta doesn't really have an "off-season" for pests. Our warm climate means homeowners can encounter unwanted visitors throughout the year — but the type of pest, the location, and the level of activity all change with the seasons.

Ants may become a bigger nuisance as spring arrives. Summer heat can increase insect activity. And when temperatures start dropping, rodents may look for protected spaces inside homes.

So instead of asking, "When is pest season?" a better question is: "Which pests should I be watching for this month?"

Here is the Servitix Atlanta Pest Calendar to help Metro Atlanta homeowners stay one step ahead.

January — Check the Places You Don't Usually See

January is a good month to look inside rather than just outside.

Rodents can seek warm, protected areas such as attics, crawl spaces, garages, and wall voids. Cockroaches and spiders can also remain active wherever they find food, moisture, and shelter.

Keep an eye out for:

  • Mice and rats
  • Cockroaches
  • Spiders

Your January checklist:

  • Inspect the garage and attic.
  • Look for droppings or gnaw marks.
  • Check gaps around pipes and utility lines.
  • Don't ignore scratching sounds in walls or ceilings.

Rodent pressure in Metro Atlanta is particularly important from October through March, which makes winter a good time to check potential entry points.

February — Don't Let Rodents Become a Spring Problem

If rodents found their way inside during the colder months, February is a good time to address the problem before activity becomes more noticeable.

A small opening around a door, pipe, vent, or utility line can provide an entry point.

Look for:

  • Droppings
  • Gnawed materials
  • Nesting material
  • Greasy marks along walls
  • Scratching or movement sounds

Tip: Don't just remove the rodent you see. Find out how it got inside. Our rodent exclusion service focuses on sealing those entry points rather than treating the same problem again next winter.

March — Ant Activity Starts Getting Your Attention

As outdoor conditions become more favorable, homeowners may start seeing more ants around foundations, patios, kitchens, windows, and doors.

Georgia has numerous nuisance ant species, and their behavior isn't identical. UGA Extension notes that some Georgia ants can have very large colonies and may move indoors under certain conditions.

Watch for:

  • Ant trails
  • Activity around windows
  • Ants near sinks
  • Nests around foundations

Don't simply spray the ants you see. Finding where they're coming from can be the more important part of solving the problem.

April — Spring Means More Outdoor Activity

April is when many homeowners start spending more time outdoors — and start noticing what has been happening around their property.

Ants, spiders, cockroaches, and other insects may become more noticeable around landscaping, foundations, garages, and outdoor living areas.

Spring inspection checklist:

  • Check around the foundation
  • Look beneath outdoor furniture
  • Inspect door and window screens
  • Trim vegetation touching the house
  • Check for moisture around the property

Spring is a great time to think about prevention rather than waiting for an infestation.

May — Watch the Foundation

By May, pest activity around the exterior of your home can become much more noticeable.

Ants may be traveling along foundations and entering through tiny openings, while spiders may begin appearing around exterior lights, porches, and other areas where insects gather.

Servitix offers targeted ant and spider treatment as part of our residential pest control programs.

Your May mission: walk around your house and look for:

  • Ant trails
  • Spider webs
  • Gaps around doors
  • Cracks around windows
  • Vegetation touching the structure
  • Moist areas near the foundation

June — Summer Pest Pressure Builds

Atlanta's summer combination of heat, humidity, and rainfall can create favorable conditions for increased pest activity.

This is when homeowners may begin noticing more cockroaches, ants, spiders, wasps, and other insects.

June reminder: your garage is part of your home. Don't forget to inspect:

  • Garage corners
  • Storage boxes
  • Around the garage door
  • Utility openings
  • Outdoor equipment

July — Cockroach Season Gets Serious

July is a month when Atlanta's heat and humidity can make pest activity especially noticeable.

Cockroaches can hide in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, crawl spaces, and other areas where moisture and food are available.

UGA Extension recommends basic prevention measures such as keeping food areas clean, storing food in airtight containers, and sealing cracks and openings.

Signs not to ignore:

  • Seeing roaches during the day
  • Droppings
  • Egg cases
  • Unusual odors
  • Repeated sightings

One cockroach doesn't always mean one cockroach.

August — If You See More Spiders, Look for Their Food

August can bring plenty of spider activity around homes. But here's something homeowners sometimes overlook: spiders need something to eat.

If you're suddenly seeing more spiders, there may also be an increase in the insects they're feeding on.

Look around:

  • Porch lights
  • Garages
  • Window frames
  • Exterior walls
  • Attics
  • Storage areas

Servitix provides spider control for common household spiders as well as certain medically significant species.

September — Your Fall Pest Check Starts Now

September is the perfect month for a pre-fall inspection. Don't wait until you hear scratching in your attic.

Check:

  • Roofline openings
  • Garage doors
  • Foundation gaps
  • Pipe penetrations
  • Crawl-space vents
  • Attic access points

If you find an opening, seal it before something finds it first.

October — Rodent Watch Begins

This is an important month for Metro Atlanta homeowners. As temperatures begin to fall, rodents may look for protected places to shelter.

October through March is the period of highest rodent intrusion pressure in Metro Atlanta.

October rule: if a mouse can get through the opening, don't assume it won't.

Inspect the exterior of your home and pay special attention to small gaps around utilities and doors.

November — Protect the Inside of Your Home

By November, homeowners are spending more time indoors — and so are many pests. Rodents, cockroaches, and spiders can take advantage of warm, undisturbed spaces.

Check these forgotten areas:

  • Attic
  • Garage
  • Basement
  • Crawl space
  • Storage room
  • Behind appliances

A clean home can still have pests. Pest prevention is also about entry points, moisture, shelter, and access to food.

December — Don't Give Pests a Holiday Home

Holiday decorations, storage boxes, and clutter can create additional hiding places for pests.

Before bringing boxes out of storage: open → inspect → then bring inside.

Pay particular attention to cardboard boxes and items that have been stored in garages, attics, or sheds.

December is also a good time to review your home's pest-prevention plan before the next spring season begins.

Why Preventative Pest Control Makes Sense in Atlanta

The biggest mistake homeowners make is waiting until they have a major infestation. By then, pests may already have established hiding places, breeding areas, or entry routes.

Our recurring residential programs are designed around year-round protection with seasonal adjustments, rather than treating every visit exactly the same way. That means the focus can change as pest pressure changes.

  • Spring: watch for ants and outdoor activity.
  • Summer: watch for cockroaches, spiders, ants, and stinging pests.
  • Fall: start looking for rodent entry points.
  • Winter: monitor indoor pest activity and protect entry points.

A Simple Atlanta Home Pest Check

You don't need to be an entomologist to spot potential problems. Once a month, walk around your home and ask:

  1. What am I seeing? Identify the pest if possible — our pest library covers 73+ insects and rodents we treat across Metro Atlanta.
  2. Where am I seeing it? Kitchen? Garage? Attic? Foundation?
  3. Why might it be there? Food? Water? Shelter? An entry point?
  4. Is it happening repeatedly? One isolated insect is different from recurring activity.
  5. Is the problem getting worse? Increasing activity is a good reason to investigate.

Don't Wait for Your Home to Become a Pest's Favorite Place

Atlanta's pest seasons don't fit neatly into four boxes. That's why Servitix focuses on inspection, targeted treatment, and ongoing protection rather than simply treating whatever pest happens to be visible that day.

Servitix provides residential pest control for ants, cockroaches, spiders, rodents, bed bugs, wasps and hornets, and other household pests across Metro Atlanta.

See a pest? Don't guess. Know what you're dealing with.
