Why do they keep coming out in winter? +

On warm winter and early spring days when interior temperatures rise enough to activate them (typically above 50°F for the wall void), they become temporarily active and emerge into living spaces. They cluster against windows trying to exit. They will continue this pattern through winter and spring until they finally exit through the entry gaps they came in through. Sealing the gaps after they've entered traps them inside — exclusion has to happen before fall migration.

Can I treat the attic to kill the cluster flies? +

Spraying or fogging attics is not recommended.
