Why do Deer Flies keep landing on my head?
Deer Flies hunt by visual cues, targeting the highest dark-moving object — which on a walking human is usually the head and shoulders. Wearing a light-colored hat or applying repellent specifically to head and hat-band reduces head bites significantly. Sticky Deer Fly traps (small sticky patches attached to hat brims) catch hunting females directly and reduce the persistent head-circling behavior.
When are Deer Flies worst?
May through July is peak Deer Fly season in Metro Atlanta. Warm humid afternoons are the worst conditions — calm, sunny days with temperatures above 80°F produce the most aggressive female activity.
