Inspect light-colored clothing or surfaces near a freshly-bitten area — you may see tiny tan or gray specks moving. Confirming species requires capturing one on tape and examining under magnification.

How do they get through my screens? +

Standard window and door screening is 16-mesh, with openings approximately 1.3 mm — large enough for No-See-Ums to pass through. Effective exclusion requires 20-mesh or finer screening, available at hardware stores as "no-see-um mesh." Screen porches in heavily-affected properties often need re-screening with the finer mesh. The trade-off is reduced airflow — finer mesh restricts ventilation more than standard screening.
